Krasselt’s Currywurst


On my last day in Berlin (Oct 19), I had to have currywurst one last time. After some last minute errands, I headed to Krasselt’s Currywurst.

Krasselt’s is located on Steglitzer Damm about a 10 minute walk from our apartment. We rode by here on the bus every day on our ride to school and it was always busy.

What Did I Have?

I had a currywurst with casing for 1.80 euro and fries for 1.50 euro and mayo was an extra 0.30 euro.

My Review

Krasselt’s makes a tasty sausage. It is spiced a little different, more like a frankfurter than a bratwurst. They also add a little brown sauce before pouring on the traditional currywurst sauce. Overall the brown sauce added a nice hearty, meaty flavor to the experience. The curry powder was also a little spicier than other currywursts I’ve had. The currywurst sauce was very tangy, a nice balance between sweet and acidic. The only downside is that they are a little too generous with the currywurst sauce. By the time I was done I still had a ton of sauce left over.

The fries here were good, nice and fresh and crispy on the outside without being dried out.

Currywurst: Konnopke’s Imbiss


Konnopke’s is located under U-Bahn tracks at Eberswalderstrasse Station in the Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood of Berlin. This is one of the most popular currywurst spots for tourists along with the mediocre Curry36. It’s an iconic place in Berlin and the lines are usually long. Thankfully, I visited on a cold, dreary day so the line only took about 5 minutes to get through.

Both Amanda and I ate here on our vacation last year so this was my second time here.

What Did I Have?

I had the “big menu” combo: Two sausages and a small fry for 5.40 euro and splurged for mayo at 0.30 euro.

My Review

This is one of the best tasting sausages, nicely spiced and just the right consistency. The casing, however, wasn’t as crispy as I’d like and the sauce was a disappointment. It was way too sweet and rather thin.  I ended up scraping most of the sauce off and just ate the excellent tasting sausage by itself.

The fries here are fine, nice and crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

Currywurst: Witty’s at Schoenefeld Airport


Witty’s has 3 locations in Berlin. Their original stand is in Wittenbergplatz across the street from the massive KaDeWe department store. The location I ate at is outside terminal A of Schoenefeld Airport south of Berlin. All of their products are organic, that plus the location means a more expensive menu.

What Did I Have?

I had a currywurst with casing and fries with mayo. Currywurst is 3.50 Euro and fries with mayo are 3.50 Euro making this some of the most expensive currywurst I’ve had.

My Review

The sausage was  nicely spiced but, since they grill instead of fry, the casing was a bit tough. The sauce was also not quite to my liking. It was basically ketchup and a bit too sweet overall. That sweetness completely cancels out any spiciness you get from the curry powder. All-in-all, a good quality sausage done no favors by the preparation.

The fries were great, some of the best I’ve had in Berlin. They were a cut a bit larger and fried to order so they were hot and fresh.

If I’m ever at Schoenefeld, I’ll definitely eat here again but I would skip their Wittenbergplatz location in favor of the superior Fritz & Co.

Currywurst: Curry Baude


Curry Baude is located just outside the busy Gesundbrunnen train station in the northern Berlin neighborhood of Wedding.  Curry Baude has been open since 1989 and all the sausages and sauces are homemade from secret family recipes.

What Did I Have?

I had a currywurst with casing and fries with mayo. Currywurst is 1.50 Euro and fries with mayo are 1.30 Euro.  I also asked for my currywurst to be a bit spicier which bumped up the scovilles to maybe a 100.

My Review

The sausage was  good, a little denser than other wursts that I’ve had and the casing was nice and crisp. The sauce was  thick and slightly smoky from the curry powder. There was no sweetness to the sauce, which I liked. Overall one of the better sausage/sauce combinations I’ve had.

The fries, however, were a failure on all fronts. They were not very fresh and way overcooked. To add insult to injury, the mayo that accompanied these crusty planks of bleakness was completely flavorless.

Prague Diary

We ended up going to Prague three times this summer. Unfortunately, our last trip was spoiled by a nasty bout of food poisoning.  Despite this, Prague remains one of our favorite cities.

I know I talked about Prague in a previous post but it’s just so damned fun there I’m going to make this second post.


During our first trip we visited the Castle area which included a visit to the old royal palace and “story of Prague” exhibit. They were both worth the entrance fee but the real gem at the Castle is the St. Vitus Cathedral and views of the rest of the city.

On our second visit we went to the very fine Museum Kampa which has a Czech-centric modern art collection.

Also on our second visit, we went to the Veletržní Palác which houses the Czech Republic’s national modern art collection. This museum quickly became one our favorite ever museums. The building is an old trade-fair hall and the exterior looks like a place you’d go to line up for permission to get a permit to buy a telephone in the Soviet era; but the interior is a beautiful, airy modern space.

We visited on a Sunday and pretty much had the place to ourselves. Our favorite part was the surprisingly large Picasso collection thanks to the Czech art patron Vincenc Kramář  who donated his collection to the museum. Another highlight was the fine collection of 19th and early 20th Century French paintings.

We visited the Veletržní Palác a second time (on our third trip) to check out the Slav Epic, which lived up to its name.

Food and Drink

I talked about beer in my first post so I’ll just add that the 2nd and 3rd time did nothing to diminish my love of Czech beer. We had the chance to visit a large old-fashioned Czech style beer hall called Lokal,  a hole-in-the wall called  Pivnice  U Hrocha, and two places known for their beer variety.

Pivnice U Hrocha was a tiny bar full of locals. We were the only tourists in the place and when we first arrived I walked up to the bar to order some beers. The surly bartender peered over the magazine he was reading,  gave me a quick glance, muttered something in Czech, and then said “sit.” Sitting was initially something of an issue as the place was packed and sitting at the bar was clearly for locals only.

We were finally able to squeeze into a table with 4 or 5 locals deep into an evening of feasting on various pork products and swilling half liter after half liter of fresh, delicious Pilsner Urquell.  They were friendly enough once we sat down but they didn’t speak a word of English.

Despite not being able to communicate very well with the patrons or staff, Hrocha was warm and cozy and great for people watching. The beer, of course, was top notch.


One place that gets a lot of advertising is the Prague Beer Museum Pub. This is a medium sized bar with a very large selection of Czech beer. The beers are a bit on the pricey side so I’d say this is only worth a short visit to try something new.

A much better place for beer variety and food is the Pivovarsky Klub. They have a rotating 6 beers on tap and hundreds more in bottle. The food is also very good here. My biggest disappointment in getting sick on our third visit was that we weren’t able to go back here.

Food in Prague is pretty basic: lots of pork, lots of goulash, even more cabbage, and some potatoes for variety. One of our favorite restaurants was U Magistra Kelly. This restaurant near the Castle serves a great beet salad or, if you’re looking for something healthier, a delicious pork knuckle.

We also ate at U Kroka twice. This restaurant specializes in simple Bohemian fare like (surprise!) pork, duck, and goose.


  • We are 99.9% sure this is the place that made us sick. We had been walking for a couple of hours and just stopped in for a drink and snacks.
  • We will never be able to drink Pilsner Urquell outside of Prague again; it just won’t taste the same.

Currywurst: Curry 7


Curry 7 is in the Kreuzberg neighborhood of Berlin just a block away from the Schlesiches Tor U-Bahnhof (subway station).

What Did We Have?

We each had a currywurst with casing and fries with mayo. Currywurst is 1.70 Euro and fries are 1.20 Euro. Mayo is an extra 0.20 Euro. We each also had a large Berliner Kindl pilsner at 2 Euro each.

Our Review

We were both in total agreement on Curry 7 so I combined our review into one.

The sausage was above average; crispy, fresh, and tasty. The sauce, however, was a bit of a disappointment.  It looked fine but it was not flavorful at all and it brought the whole experience down a notch. It’s too bad because the above average sausage deserved better.

The fries were OK, nothing extraordinary but nothing horrible. Overall Curry 7 falls right in the middle of the scale for us for currywurst.

Currywurst: Die esS-Bahn (Tegel Airport)


Die esS-Bahn is located at Berlin’s Tegel airport. It is outside between the main terminal building and terminal D. They also have outlets at Berlin’s Schonefeld airport as well as Cologne and Stuttgart. We had some time to kill before a recent flight so we decided to check it out.

I believe the name is a play on the German verb essen (to eat) and S-Bahn, the name for the common German urban rail system. The location itself is an old Berlin S-Bahn car.

As far as food at the airport is concerned, this is by far the best deal.

What Did We Have?

We shared a currywurst with casing and fries with mayo. I don’t remember how much it cost but it was cheap for airport standards.

Our Review

We both liked Die esS-Bahn. If you like “lit’l smokies” in barbecue sauce, this is the currywurst for you. We both like “lit’l smokies” so this was a win for us. The sausage was mildly spiced and the sauce was sweet with a smokier taste than other currywursts we’ve tried. The only negative is that the casing was a bit tough.

The fries were run of the mill, nothing bad but not great.

We will definitely skip the high priced fare in the terminal building and head for die esS-Bahn if we’re ever hungry at the airport again.

Order Fries Like a Local

French fries are popular throughout the many snack stands in Berlin and I got into a short conversation with our German language teacher about the proper way to order fries in Germany. One way to sound like a local is to ask for pommes schranke (roughly pronounced pum-es / schrank-uh).

Pommes derives from the French word for potato (pomme de terre) and scranke is the German word for a swinging barrier or gate like the kind you’d find at a parking garage or level railroad crossings. Many of these gates are painted in red and white stripes, thus, ketchup and mayo.

I then tried to explain to our instructor what patat oorlog was in Holland but she thought that sounded disgusting.

Currywurst: Curry 36


Curry 36  is an extremely popular currywurst stand located on Mehringdamm in the Kreuzberg neighborhood of Berlin.

This was one of the busiest stands we’ve visited so far and, frankly, we were hard pressed to figure out why. Everything was just a half a notch below what we have had at other places. We both agreed that Curry 36’s popularity is probably more a function of savvy marketing than anything food related.

In addition to currywurst, Curry 36 also has a wide variety of other snacks, such as chicken nuggets, bockwurst, krakauers, and salads.

What Did We Have?

We each had the special: 2 currywursts (one with casing and one without) and fries with mayo. The special cost 4.60 Euro.

Chris’s Review

I suppose I would eat at Curry 36 again if the line at the very excellent Mustafa’s was too long. Mustafa’s is one of my favorite kebab places but it is always busy and it can take a while to get through the line. In fact, we ate at Curry 36 because the line was too long at Mustafa’s last week and we didn’t want to wait 30+ minutes. Anyway, this isn’t a review of Mustafa’s so on to Curry 36.

This was nothing special. It wasn’t bad but just about every other currywurst we’ve had has been better. The sauce seemed both too salty and too sweet at the same time with no heat or spicy subtlety. The sausages, while good quality were just slightly tough and bland.

The fries were tough on the outside and a bit dry on the inside. Overall, the experience was no more than mediocre.
